The RD1000 works in all light conditions, but is especially
good in low light stands such as dense coastal hemlock
stands. It allows the user to brighten or darken the
projected image. It can also calculate the height from the
stump to any diameter on the tree, including total height.
It can calculate the diameter of a tree, at any point on the
bole. A user can input the distance to the tree manually or
via Impulse 200 or TruPulse Laser. The RD 1000 even corrects
for slope. We have added to the functionality of this device
by adding a lens cover so that foresters can use the RD 1000
without the magnifier lens and be less likely to collect
rain and dirt on the recessed lens. We have also added a
spring loaded retractor that can be attached to a vest to
prevent damage from accidentally dropping the instrument. As
a final step, we provide a screen protector for the LED
display to prevent scratching and ensure readability for
future use. Measurement Modes and Features:
- BAF: Visually estimates if trees fall in or out of a
given plot as related to the specified Basal Area
Factor.
- In/Out: Internally computes the limiting distance
for questionable, borderline trees and determines if
they are in or out of the plot.
- Diameter: Determines the diameter of a tree at any
given height.
- Height/Diameter: Provides the ability to determine
the height at which a specific diameter occurs.
- Raw Inclination: Measures inclination in percent
slope

Advantages:
- The RD1000 is exceptional in terms of
allowing users to easily and accurately
determine in and out trees, especially in dense
stands on cloudy or rainy days.
- The tilt sensor stabilizes very fast.
- Heights and diameters are displayed in the
view finder and on the side screen.
- Many functions can be performed without
looking at the buttons or side screen.
- The RD1000 has built-in calculation
capability for limiting distance.
|
Disadvantages:
- When calculating diameter or heights, the
menu system may slow the user somewhat.
- Users must calculate the ratio in inches to
determine bole height to a top diameter
fraction.
- The unit runs on batteries, requiring that
spare batteries be carried in the field. (2
